Letter to parents, March 4, 1966

March 4, 1966

Dear Mom & Dad,

This has been one heck of a busy morning so far. Tom stayed
up last night writing a paper which was due at 10 this morning.
So I had to get up early this morning, drive him to school, come
back & type 8 pages, then rush back to school so he could turn the
paper in. The typing wouldn't have been so bad, except for
deciphering Tom's writing. When he gets tired he ignores all
punctuation, spelling, capitalization, etc. Typing his papers is
really a job of editing. But the paper did get turned in on time &
only half the class did that. How people can always have late
papers is beyond me - I'd be a nervous wreck knowing I was
behind that way.

Tom's studying now for an econ test at 2 this afternoon. Then, on
Wednesday (Tom needed this pen) he has a test in literary criticism
& 2 more short papers due Thursday. These 22 hours are turning
into quite the grind, but the grades are staying up "remarkably
well" so I guess there's no worry.

I haven't really accomplished a darn thing this week. Went
out to Gail's house Tuesday afternoon for a visit - she lives with
her in-laws as her husband is still in school. Her father in law
is a psychiatrist at the med. center, but how those people live!
Their house is a shamble from top to bottom. What really got me
was that they have a cleaning lady even though Gail & her
mother-in-law are both home all day. That must be the pinnacle
of laziness! Still in all, I had a nice visit & learned some about
rare books - they have quite a collection.

Wasn't too surprised to hear Aunt Ruth sold her new house.
I think it would take a bomb to get her out of the old one.
In this case, though, she was probably wise, as she did make a profit.
But still she could stand a change of scenery - might do her a
world of good.

- 2 -

Thanks for calling us the other evening. I wish I would have
known about Mrs. M's birthday, but she didn't seem to mind.
She didn't have much new to report when she called, except to
say the man down the street died - heart attack. Also, she said
she was sending me a big cooking pot. I don't know if Mrs.
Wilke still plans on buying one - perhaps you could deter her if
she hasn't already gotten it. May she could just wait & get
something for the baby 'cause, other than furniture, Tom & I are
pretty well set up.

I've been feeling pretty fair this week. I have been kinda tired,
but I've slept most of that feeling away.

It is really blowing up a storm or something outside today.
That's why I drove Tom to school - it's almost impossible to
walk.

Well, I need to get lunch on so I can get to the grocery store.
Your roast is down to the bones & we need food. The roast was
just excellent, thank you. Take care & let us know how you're
doing & Uncle Dan, too.

Love,
Betty & Tom
