Dear Mom & Dad,
Tom has gone over to school to see about what
to do picnic-wise. It's not as warm today as
it has been, so don't know for sure if we'll go.
For me, it's not too cold - my ski pants still have
a semblance of fit & with my sweat shirt I feel
very comfortable out. Will see what Harry & Rog
think.
Happry to hear you're planning a California trip.
The Millers will be so pleased, I know. And
it has been a quite a while since you went.
The only thing that worries me is your car - will
it make another trip? Wouldn't it be better if
you took the Blue-Bird? We could just trade
cars for a few weeks. It would be fine
with Tom & me.
Tom's old room mate, Dan Hoerner, is down here
for the weekend. He came by yesterday & stayed
quite a while. Tom was really happy to see him
& so was I - he's owed us $5 since January.
Dan still doesn't have a job, but not from lack
of opportunity. He's enjoying a little vacation. He
gave Tom an idea about a job, though & I think
Tim will see more about it when we're home.
It's with the Treasury Dept. - $6,000 the first
year, $7,000 the next, $9,000 the third & prob.
like hens teeth the rest, but still that's pretty
- 2 -
good.
Sat. eve.
Had to stop writing before. Tom came home &
said the picnic was on, so had to get the sandwiches
ready & go. We went out to Wilson's Creek about
10 miles south of Springfield. It's the site of a
Civil War battle, but now it's mostly full of cows.
They're allowed to graze free & while we were
eating 5 of them wandered right up to us. But
even with the cows, it's a beautiful place for a
picnic. Tom put some film in his camera, so
we now have a start on a slide collection. Hope
they turn out.
We got a letter from Tom's mother yesterday,
along with a newspaper ad of some things she had
bought for the baby - playpen, stroller & little
bouncer-walker. Think she got a little carried away
there!
Don't think we'll go anywhere tonight. All afternoon
out has made us both kinda sleepy. And Tom had
another test yesterday so he's kinda done in. I
better get some kind of dinner together now, so will
see you Wed. evening. Again, don't wait dinner on
anything - I'll just make sandwiches.
Love,
Betty & Tom
